From martial arts to water polo, IB Hochschule supports students not only in their daily training but also at upcoming competitions. The athletes are supported financially with training materials or the assumption of travel costs.
In doing so, IB Hochschule promotes a healthy and active life in all its diversity and enables students to reach their sporting and academic goals.
Studies and elite sport – a double burden?
Combining studies and elite sport is often a major challenge because of the double burden. Young elite athletes are always faced with the demand to deliver top performance both in sport and in studies. As a strong partner, IB Hochschule supports Felix Dobrzynski in practising and training his sport: water polo.
Interview with Felix Dobrzynski
How did your sporting career develop so far? – F. Dobrzynski: "I have been swimming for as long as I can remember at SG Neukölln, and after a short sporting reorientation through American Football I came to water polo." As a swimmer he managed to take part in many internationally attended competitions with numerous wins over the 50- and 100-metre freestyle and butterfly distances. At the Berlin Championships 2017, he was among the 30 fastest swimmers in Berlin. Since 2018 he plays in the second water polo Bundesliga. In the last season they reached the quarter finals of the East German Cup and finished the 2018–19 season among the top five teams.
You study Speech and Language Therapy (Logopaedics) at IB Hochschule für Gesundheit und Soziales. Can you also use elements from sport for your studies and vice versa? – "Sure! Many people associate speech and language therapy with speech disorders, but physiological breathing and self-perception play a major role. Through my studies, I have been able to use all breathing spaces optimally and develop longer diving phases that give me an advantage in matches and races."
How can your studies be combined with elite sport? – "The individual support of lecturers is very good, and even with a high training load of 2 sessions per day, care is taken to convey the material well. Lecturers also always have an open ear and offer opportunities to submit work flexibly so that I can take part in national and international games and meets. The digital teaching offering of the university is particularly helpful and, in combination with the very good support, provides an optimal basis for an excellent learning climate."
What are your next sporting goals? – "Since I am currently training in the perspective squad of the 1st Bundesliga, my next sporting goal is to be included in the squad of the first water polo Bundesliga to compete there for the German championship."
Many thanks for the interview, Felix – we wish you much success in reaching your goals!
