Loneliness as a health risk – especially for young people

Loneliness Summit in Reinickendorf

On 16 December 2025, our professor Dr. Tajana Grießmann-Gehrt was invited to give a scientific talk at the Loneliness Summit in Reinickendorf town hall (Berlin) on the topic: "Loneliness in adolescents and young adults – an underestimated health risk".

An important topic that shows: loneliness affects not only older people – young people in particular are increasingly at risk.

"In public perception and in clinical practice, loneliness has for decades primarily been treated as a geriatric syndrome. It turns out, however, that the life phases of adolescence and early adulthood, which we want to focus on today, are not only characterised by maximum social networking, high interaction density or subjective feelings of belonging, as was long assumed." – Prof. Dr. Tajana Grießmann-Gehrt

In addition to numerous interested guests, four schools participated in the Loneliness Summit. In four working groups, participants reflected on and discussed how to address this topic in a practice-oriented way. The day, prepared over a long period, was a complete success!

The second photo also shows the Mayor of Reinickendorf, Ms. Demirbüken-Wegner, who hosted the day.

The annual Loneliness Summit brings together science, practice and local initiatives. This year, the young generation was particularly in focus – adolescents and young adults whose loneliness often goes unnoticed in everyday life. Through expert presentations, workshops and exchange formats, they should be given a voice and new ways of networking should be created.

Reinickendorf district thereby sends a clear message: nobody should be left alone with the feeling of loneliness.
