Virtuelle
Hochschulklinik
A research project building virtual teaching and learning scenarios, funded by the Innovation Fund of the Internationaler Bund (IB).
"Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have the potential to markedly improve practice- and workplace-oriented learning in vocational education and training. As the technology matures and devices become cheaper, the range of uses for VR and AR is expanding fast." (BMBF, 2017)
The Virtual University Hospital develops and tests virtual teaching and learning scenarios in HI University's degree programmes in health and social care. The technical setup and the first VR applications are built to last: how each scenario comes about is documented through research, and its transfer to other educational institutions is prepared from the start.
Under the motto "first virtual then real," 360-degree footage from real practice is built into the courses.
VR glasses, the so-called "VR headsets" with sound, let students step right into virtual reality (immersion).

Film and 360-degree footage
So far, footage has been filmed at Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin (ukb) and in practical courses at IB Hochschule. Recording of clinical case series is currently delayed because of the pandemic.
Clinical recordings:
- Air ambulance helicopter
- STEMO – stroke emergency mobile unit
- Emergency response vehicle
- Patient rooms: nursing sequences – repositioning and changing dressings
- Doctor–patient sequence: digital medication management
- 360-degree footage of the ukb grounds and main entrance
Students are warmly invited to take part in the Virtual University Hospital project, for example through their thesis work.
