Therapeutic Research as continuing professional development for healthcare professions — Testing, evaluation, and establishment of sustainable implementation strategies
The BMBF competition "Advancement through Education: Open Universities" is part of the qualification initiative launched by the federal and state governments in 2008 to promote educational opportunities for all citizens. Following a first round in 2011, the second round started in summer 2014. HIU received funding for both the 1st funding round (2014–2018) and the 2nd funding round (2018–2020). The goals include securing the supply of skilled workers and improving permeability between vocational and higher education.
The project team comprises: Prof. Dr. Mariam Hartinger, content and administrative project lead (speech scientist), Prof. Dr. Antje Schubert (physiotherapist, health educator, health scientist), Carolin Schulz (physiotherapist M.Sc.), Dunja Ewinger (political scientist, speech therapy programme), Lisa Redlich (physiotherapist B.Sc.), Felix Gauger (B.A. Television and Film, applied psychology programme), and Melina Clasen (applied psychology programme).
Vision: Scientific Continuing Education
The video shows the decision-making process of a therapist (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy) for scientific continuing education at a university. The role of the employer is part of this decision.
Implementation: Education Partnership
The vision becomes reality. In the form of an educational partnership with BG Klinikum Hamburg. Both the employer's side and the therapists' side convey their attitudes toward scientific continuing education.

Following the development of the two certificate programmes for scientific requalification of therapy professions in the 1st funding phase, the 2nd phase pursues the goal of testing and evaluating the continuing education programmes. The programmes are designed for working professionals in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy who wish to expand their therapeutic experience with scientific competencies and project management.
Certificate Programme Therapeutic Research I (TRI) — Bachelor level: 30 ECTS credits. Modules: Scientific Working, Clinical Reasoning/Evidence-Based Practice, Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods, Practice Project/Project Management
Certificate Programme Therapeutic Research II (TRII) — Master level: 30 ECTS credits. Modules: Quantitative Research Methods and Statistics, Qualitative Research Methods, Project and Quality Management, Research Project
Therapists with an academic degree at bachelor level can deepen their competencies in scientific work and project/quality management at the master level
Long-term goal: Improving therapy quality through the application of scientific competencies and alignment with international standards
