New study: how geriatric patients assess the use of smart sensor technology in healthcare

As part of the AktiSmart-KI project, in which researchers from IB Hochschule are involved, older patients in a geriatric rehabilitation clinic were surveyed on how they evaluate the use of smart sensor technology in healthcare.

The majority of respondents fundamentally trust this technology, primarily because high accuracy is attributed to it. However, concerns were also raised that such systems might change the relationship with caregivers. An important question for respondents is also who covers the costs for such systems if they are deployed. Interestingly, most patients had no concerns about the protection of their data and privacy.

The results show openness towards smart sensor technologies. They also suggest, however, that the risks are not fully understood. For clinical use, comprehensive and understandable information is therefore a prerequisite. In addition, patients should already be involved in the development of new smart sensor technologies in order to take their concerns, abilities, wishes and goals into account.
