Late effects of spinal cord injury: prevention and therapy

DMGP annual conference

On the occasion of the 35th annual meeting of the German-speaking Medical Society for Paraplegia (DMGP), a specialist conference of the Psychology Working Group took place on 22 and 23 June 2022 in Bad Wildungen, Hesse, on the topic "Late effects of spinal cord injury: prevention and therapy". The DMGP is a non-profit society that serves the cooperation of all professional groups involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries.

Accompanied by Prof. Dr. Ingo Pals, Emma Hartisch was invited to present the approach and results of her Bachelor's thesis in the form of a poster to the DMGP experts. Her Bachelor's thesis investigated whether people with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury show higher depressivity than those without traumatic brain injury. Contrary to the original assumption, the results within the first three months after acute spinal cord injury do not indicate increased depression in patients with additional traumatic brain injury.

In the subsequent discussion, the participants' questions were addressed, and further interesting questions for future research were identified.
