Mastering the balance: Franziska Buder on her experience in judo, studies and work
As an experienced judo enthusiast, how long have you been practising judo and what were the stations on your judo journey?
"I have been practising this martial art since 2002," she explains. "I started at Judo-Club 03 Berlin e.V., where I trained for most of the years. I took part in many Berlin championships and regularly qualified for the North-East German championships. Although I won some Berlin championship vice-titles, those from the sports school often stood ahead of me on the podium. My best results at the North-East championships were fifth places."
Franziska is not only an experienced athlete but also a committed referee and coach. "Since 2012 I have been a referee, now a federal referee. I have also worked as a coach for many years," she explains proudly.
On the question of her future challenges in judo, she answers: "The next challenges for me are the international Elephant Cup and the German University Championships. This year the North-East German championships are also on the agenda. My ultimate dream would be to qualify for the German championships."
Franziska was recently at an intensive training camp in Szczecin, run by Polizei S.V. Berlin. "At the training camp I prepared for upcoming competitions together with selected athletes from PSV Rostock, my current club," she reports. "Three intensive days were led, among others, by Kotaro Sasaki, the former Polish national coach. He followed the invitation of Polizei S.V. Berlin. The remaining sessions were led by the coach of Polizei S.V. Berlin, Kevin Kissk."
Franziska studies Health Care Education / Gesundheitspädagogik B.A. at IB Hochschule and plans to graduate in March 2024. "After that I would like to complete my master's at IB Hochschule," she adds. "Professionally I plan to move from the hospital and shift work to the vocational school sector to train future medical technologists in radiology."
Finally, tell us: how do you manage to combine elite sport, work and studies?
"Combining all the tasks is very difficult. It requires very good time management, discipline, and you also have to give some things up. Support from family, partner, club and employer is very important. Alone it wouldn't have been possible to manage this."
As a university, we sincerely thank Franziska Buder for her inspiring insights and this interview. We wish her all the best for her future judo championships and her academic path.
