Healthcare is undergoing a digital transformation – and we need professionals who actively shape it. In summer semester 2024, the new Digital Health program launched at HIU, right on the Health Campus at ukb.
We spoke with Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Lacour about how the first year went.
"We are thrilled that the program not only met but exceeded our expectations. Students are fully engaged and explain through their own work experience how important digital medicine is. The team is already looking forward to upcoming semesters and new focus areas like artificial intelligence and software engineering."
The program was developed by HIU in cooperation with the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin (ukb), with teaching taking place directly on-site so students benefit from the hospital's advanced digital infrastructure.
The Bachelor's and Master's programs train professionals to actively shape digital transformation. The part-time format ensures direct application of content in the workplace while remaining family-friendly. Modules emphasize practical application and project-based implementation of digital technologies – distinguishing HIU's program from others in Germany that often focus on general management.
From the very first week, digitalization topics are discussed interdisciplinarily. Different healthcare specialties – medical technology, insurance, clinical staff – come together, exchange knowledge, and develop innovative solutions. Students engage with digital diagnostics, therapy, robotics, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and data protection in digital medicine. They learn not only from lecturers but from each other.
Graduates are equipped to support patients with modern technologies including virtual reality and AI. Beyond technical questions, ethical and legal considerations, including transhumanism, are also part of the curriculum.
The programs welcome applicants from medicine, medical technology, IT, insurance, healthcare professions, psychology, pharmacy, nursing, and emergency services with at least one year of healthcare experience.
