Between Individual Assignments and Group Pizza Orders: How a University Weekend at HIU Works

"It's a shared journey that also follows each individual's professional successes and new opportunities. Sometimes there are setbacks or doubts, but also personal joys that sometimes extend the degree program."
With these words, Stefanie Bautsch, a Health Education graduate, describes what a university weekend at HIU means to her – more than just lectures and exams. It's about exchange, community, and personal growth.
The Health Education and Applied Therapy Sciences programs are designed as part-time formats. Teaching takes place on weekends, with students coming together once a month from Friday to Sunday.
The university weekend begins with a study brief that frames the topic and provides literature. Fridays often start online, with the option to join from campus. Each weekend includes an assessment – which can take the form of presentations, papers, exams, or video formats, either individual or group work.
"What makes the university weekend special is the intensive interdisciplinary exchange. You gain deep insights into other professional fields, broadening your personal perspective. And it's a shared journey – following each other's professional successes and personal milestones."
On the benefits of in-person attendance: "For on-site students, presence is advantageous. The campus offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation during breaks. Direct contact with others is much more enjoyable than staring at a screen. On the other hand, travel costs are higher for those coming from further away."
Despite organizational challenges, for many students the feeling of being part of an engaged and vibrant learning community is what makes the journey to HIU worthwhile.
We sincerely thank Stefanie Bautsch for the open conversation and insight into her study experience, and wish her all the best as an HIU graduate!
